The New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame was created to honor and recognize outstanding veterans from the Empire State who have distinguished themselves both in military and civilian life. Their meritorious service to our nation deserves the special recognition that only a Hall of Fame can provide, as a fitting expression of our gratitude and admiration.
This year Corporal George Broadhead, President of the Gerritsen Beach Property Owners was inducted into the Hall of Fame who Senator Golden selected for induction into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame this year. Corporal Broadhead, of Gerritsen Beach, served during the Korean War. He was awarded the Silver Star Medal, the Purple Heart Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Naval Unit Citation and campaign awards.

LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring George R. Broadhead upon the occasion of
his designation for special recognition for his brave service to his
country
WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York, who
have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this country’s
freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace in peace
time, deserve a special salute from this Legislative Body; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
George R. Broadhead upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition for his brave service to his country at the Annual Memorial
Day Breakfast and Award Ceremony on Thursday, May 26, 2011, at Bay Ridge
Manor in Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, Born in Brooklyn in 1932, George R. Broadhead enlisted in the
United States Marine Corps in 1951, and served in the Korean War; and
WHEREAS, As a Corporal, George R. Broadhead was awarded the Silver
Star Medal for his gallantry in action, as well as a Purple Heart Medal;
he was also awarded the Combat Action Ribbon, the Naval Unit Citation
(for two time periods) the Korean Presidential Unit Citation; Korean
Campaign (with three battle stars), Korean War Service Medal; Good
Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and a UN Medal; and
WHEREAS, After his service, George R. Broadhead returned to his
college studies at St. John’s University in Brooklyn in 1956; and
WHEREAS, In 1960, George R. Broadhead began a lifetime in publishing,
starting as a newsletter editor for The McGraw-Hill Publishing Company
in New York; he held a series of positions including newsletter editor,
copywriter, advertising sales, and Director of Sales, throughout differ
ent locations across the country before joining Newhouse Newspapers in
New York in 1984; and
WHEREAS, In 1989, George R. Broadhead was promoted to West Coast
Manager for Newhouse Newspapers, in Beverly Hills, California; in 1999,
he retired from Newhouse Newspapers and returned to New York; and
WHEREAS, A lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and the
VFW, George R. Broadhead was Post Commander of VFW Post 107 from
2005-2008, and Kings County Commander for two terms in 2007 and 2008;
and
WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which these men and women served their country, and must recognize
that no greater debt is owed than that owed to those who risk their
lives for their beloved Nation; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad,
George R. Broadhead has demonstrated his love for his country and merits
forevermore, the highest respect of his State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Our Nation’s veterans deserve to be recognized, commended and
thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and for
their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor George R. Broadhead upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition for his brave service to his country; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran
smitted to George R. Broadhead.
